Giacob Basevi Cervetto

Cervetto

Flute concerto in D major Six trio sonatas cover

Giacob Basevi Cervetto (1690–1783), known in England as Jacob Cervetto, was one of London’s leading cellists in the middle decades of the eighteenth century. Born into the small Jewish community of Verona, he came to London in 1739 and instantly carved out an important place for himself in the capital’s musical life both as performer and as composer. Most of his works featured prominently his own instrument, but he also composed sonatas for the flute, which like the cello, was at that time a favourite instrument among amateurs. At the Drury Lane theatre, in whose orchestra he was principal cellist, and in public concerts elsewhere he regularly played concertos of his own composition.
