Thomas Modrej was born in 1973 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee/Austria. He studied German and music education (teacher training) as well as composition and music theory with Prof Alfred Stingl and conducting with Prof Wolfgang Czeipek.

He was head of the department and teacher of music theory at the Carinthian State Music School. He led a composition class at the Carinthian State Conservatory, where he also served as head of the department.

In 2023, he was appointed university professor for applied composition at the Gustav Mahler Private University of Carinthia. Until 2021, he also served as a board member at the Institute for Musical Performance Art. He currently teaches a class in composition and applied composition at GMPU and lectures in music history and instrumentation, among other subjects. Thomas Modrej's compositional oeuvre includes works in many genres (chamber music, orchestral works, music theatre, symphonic wind music, Choral music), as well as media music (sound design for radio stations, film music, studio arrangements), theatre music composition and orchestration.

He has won several prizes and is currently a member of the Carinthian state government's advisory board for music.
