Star King Of Day was commissioned by the percussionist
Alonzo Mendoza for the Latidos festival intended to celebrate the
Mexican Day Of The Dead but the origins of the music go further
back to my interest in shamanism and its practice. Star King of day
is the latest in a series of compositions inspired by shamanic
ritual, which has strong musical elements and require great
expenditure of energy. The instrumentalist and the wizard have
something in common, not least in their power to induce physical
and emotional responses in the people they serve. In my
compositions, the performer is often a wizard communing with the
spirits in a kind of celestial dance. Star King of Day starts with a
song of peace and an invocation and as the spirits enter the body
of the shaman we hear their dialogue through the instruments.
