Strong winds, gentle airs

Wind band, timpani, percussion, marimba, bass guitar

Duration, c9 minutes

Strong Winds, Gentle Airs was written for the Wirral Schools' Concert Band at the request of its director, David Straughan, in 1987. As the title implies, there are essentially two types of material - one which has a forceful, rhythmic character and the other, largely featuring the soprano saxophone, is more relaxed with slow moving, almost static harmonies. In revising the piece for publication and performance today, I have made one or two small alterations to the scoring, 'notated out' one or two sections which had been aleatoric, but overall have tried to retain as much of the original character as possible.
