Alessandro Rolla

Two flute quartets

Op. 2 · BI 418, BI 415

Flute · violin · viola · violoncello

Michael Elphinstone

The celebrated viola and violin virtuoso Alessandro Rolla (1757–1841), who was Paganini’s teacher, composed mostly chamber music. Although these two delightful works are technically unchallenging for the flautist, the composer’s characteristic and highly developed concertante writing is present in the quartets’ outer movements, the violin and viola receiving most of the solo episodes.
