The cantata Pallidetta viola has come down to us in five non-autograph manuscript sources respectively preserved in Genoa, London (two MSS), Paris, and Pavia: the transmission of the musical text of this composition is rather complex. In this edition the numerous errors present in the sources are corrected, and a sample realization of the basso continuo is provided. Additionally, information is provided for the first time on the possible date of this cantata, a very experimental and unusual composition (known to the public by the title of ‘La Viola gialla’), via an analysis of musical structure and a study of all primary sources.
