There is much worthwhile material to discover in the oeuvre of the Graun brothers,
but as Pisendel observed to Telemann “general confusion reigns” in attribution
between the two due to similarities in both musical style and handwriting! In a
detailed preface Elphinstone justifies naming Carl Heinrich as the composer and
explores the various source materials in detail.
This charming work is in the four movement slow-fast-slow-fast format and should
appeal to performers of both historical and modern flutes. The instrumental parts are
well laid out, avoiding awkward page turns and there is an efficient continuo
realisation in smaller print in the score.
