German oboist and violinist Sebastian Bodinus (1700–1759) might be almost completely forgotten today were it not for his Musicalischen Divertissiments, a six-part collection of ensemble sonatas published by the Leopold family in Augsburg and issued between 1726 and 1730. Part III (1728) comprises six trio sonatas for oboe, violin and basso continuo, an inevitable combination given that the composer began his career as an oboist before effectively setting the instrument aside in favour of the violin.
The present works promulgate the sonata model established in Part I of the collection (Edition HH, 2026). Fundamentally, they are sonate da chiesa, yet several introduce dance movements foreign to the Corellian prototype, including the menuet, bourrée and siciliana, while others feature imitative movements entitled ‘fuga’. Trio sonata sets for this particular scoring are scarce, making the publication of this first modern edition a most welcome addition to the repertoire.
