In 2026, my singing teacher, Marion van den Akker, celebrated her seventieth birthday. She asked her singers to share their songs at her party. I decided to take this literally and to compose a song for her. I was writing with her voice – a beautiful, warm mezzo-soprano – in mind, but using my own soprano as a frame of reference. The result is, I hope, something which should give a pleasing challenge to female singers in both fachs, and to tenors and high baritones.
