Emma Brown was born in Nottingham in 1985. She read music at the University of Cambridge and singing and post-graduate composition at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, the Netherlands, specialising in church music. Inspiration for her choral compositions comes from a variety of sources, including the music of the Orthodox traditions, Gregorian chant and Counter-Reformation polyphony. Drawn to mystical texts, she sees her church music primarily as contemplative. Emma has also written chamber and theatre music. As a performer, she works internationally as a solo mezzo-soprano/alto.
